In 1539, a group of traveling soldiers, miners, and priests ventured along a river in Colorado, led in hope and desperation by a Portuguese don. Legend tells that a Spaniard in the expedition party mutinied, killing the leader to take his place. The priests refused to go further under leadership of the murderous Spaniard and left the expedition to their lost fate. All remaining souls in the party were killed off by the land and native inhabitants.
The Animas River in Durango, CO holds stories of lost souls, buried treasure, and untamed adventure. This neckerchief pays homage to El Rio de Las Animas Perdidas.
